America as a place to escape and emigrate to – a symbol of a new world and a new beginning. Leonard Bernstein, one of the first composers born and educated in the United States, was actually a child of Jews who emigrated from the Ukraine. Erich Korngold, the composer who fled Vienna before World War II, the young composer Jonas Tarm, who left Estonia with his parents as a child and the violinist Ilja Gringolts, who went from St. Petersburg to study further at Juilliard went themselves to live in America. The programme encompasses the perception of America of these diverse individuals.
