The title piece, In Principio, is a five-movement setting of the opening verses of the Gospel of John, exploring themes of creation and the divine Word. Other notable works on the album include La Sindone, an orchestral piece evoking the Shroud of Turin, and Cecilia, vergine romana dedicated to the patron saint of music. The compositions span nearly a decade, offering a comprehensive insight into Pärt's evolving musical expression during this time period. The performances are delivered by three esteemed Estonian musical collectives under the direction of conductor Tõnu Kaljuste, a long-time collaborator of Pärt, ensuring nuanced interpretations.
